A contemporary outdoor space for a social family home
The Bowdon Project was inspired after the client decided to transform their outdoor living space following the first lockdown announcement - the perfect time to optimise your own back garden. The brief was to provide an outdoor entertaining space for the whole family, featuring a sunken fire pit area and patio that makes the most of the sliding glass doors.

The client wanted an outdoor entertainment space that was suitable for the whole family, featuring a sunken fire pit and hot tub as well as a modern outdoor kitchen and dining area.
One of the key features of the outdoor space was the wide sliding doors, already a feature of the home. However the outdoor space wasn't efficient to make it a comfortable garden, so we really focused on bringing the indoor style, outside.
The main challenges with this project were the sunken elements. The client had found an inspiration picture online of a sunken fire pit and wanted to recreate this for a cosy entertaining space. This came with it's own set of unique challenges due to difficult ground conditions and ensuring we got the drainage correct to prevent flooding. We faced similar challenges with the sunken hot tub, but were able to work through these and both ourselves and the client are delighted with the outcome.
We installed the most-popular Millboard composite decking around the sunken Hot Springs hot tub as this is not only a stylish addition to the outdoor living space, but is non-slip and water resistant unlike other flooring alternatives.
Marshalls Porcelain Paving is used throughout the patio as well as cladding the feature wall, for a seamless and contemporary finish. The sunken fire pit is gas mains powered to ensure the client does not have to replace any gas canisters mid-party, and the two contemporary pergolas adds additional shelter for this cosy entertainment space.
One of main features was the outdoor kitchen. This luxurious outdoor kitchen features a built-in, mains-powered gas BBQ, sink with hot and cold running water and fitted fridge, topped with porcelain worktops and an iroko hardwood front.
A huge porcelain clad feature wall provides a backdrop for the hot tub and dining area, including a recessed Tech2o outdoor TV which is perfectly placed to enjoy from the hot tub, as well as cedar cladding either side for additional privacy. Connected to SkyTV and WiFi, our client has the ability to stream or watch whatever takes their fancy!
In terms of the rest of the garden, we added pathways around the garden and some retaining sleepers. We resurfaced the whole back garden with new grass and used uplighting throughout the garden to highlight the main trees, as well as spotlights in the planting borders and LED lighting throughout the outdoor entertainment space. All lighting is on a smart system controlled by Alexa for simple and efficient use.
Overall the client was incredibly happy with their new outdoor living space in Greater Manchester. The overall contemporary design, bringing in premium outdoor living products and using only the finest partners has created an elevated, luxurious garden for them to enjoy for years to come.
